Is LASIK Right For You?

Some patients may not be a valid candidate if one or more of the following conditions are present:

Dry eyes
If you already have dry eyes, LASIK may not be for you. After the surgery, nerves in your cornea may eliminate the response that triggers lubrication in the eyes. Because of this, even less tears might be produced, which can leave you with severe dry eyes.
Glaucoma
During the LASIK procedure, a suction is used on the eye, which can cause an increase in intraocular pressure. For those who suffer with glaucoma, an increased level of IOP can lead to blindness.
Cataracts
In most cases, patients who have cataracts cannot be treated for LASIK, unless they are small congenital cataracts.
Pregnancy or nursing
If you are pregnant or are nursing, your hormones may have an impact on your prescription. Because of this, we will not perform LASIK on you until after you give birth or are no longer nursing.
Injury or infection
If you currently have an injured eye or infection, you may not be considered for the procedure until after the infection clears up or injury heals.

Comprehensive Eye Exam: All laser vision correction consultations will include a thorough eye exam, during which your vision, ocular health, and overall health will be carefully evaluated. We'll perform a series of practical and diagnostic tests to check every aspect of your eyes. These tests are not invasive and are virtually pain-free. In fact, you have probably experienced them before if you have ever had an eye exam. Our goal will be to determine whether your eyes are healthy and rule out problems such as glaucoma, dry eye, cataracts, and other issues before clearing you for surgery.

Discussion of Surgery Details: During your appointment, we will review the details of laser vision correction. We describe the process, discuss the possible risks and benefits, and mention what you can expect to pay. You will have the chance to ask questions and bring forward any concerns you might have.

Review Your Treatment Options: We will be able to determine whether you are a candidate for LASIK or another vision correction possibility by the end of your exam. We will review your options with you, at which point you will have time to consider your preference and reach a decision.
