EYE CARE FOR KIDS
It is important to detect any visual disorders and problems early so there will not be any permanent developmental vision problems resulting from undetected eye problems.
The American Optometric Association and the American Medical Association now recommend that children receive their first eye exam by age 9 months. It is important that the children see their pediatrician and eye doctor as well. The pediatrician will look at the general health of the eyes but will not look at muscle imbalance and prescription problems. We provide family eye care services for both adults and children.
Children should have the chance to learn at their full capacity. Children with undiagnosed eye disorders are more likely to have to repeat a grade level in school, have behavior problems, be diagnosed with ADD, and perform below their intellectual abilities. Children Eye Care
In today’s world, children grow up staring at their phones, tablets and computers; it’s all a part of their lives. The introduction and use of electronics starts by age 1, and the number of books used is reduced and replaced by these digital devices. Proper ergonomics of the use of technology and the necessity to take breaks isn’t being taught by teachers, parents, or society.
The 20-20-20 rule
Remember to help your children practice the 20-20-20 rule: For every 20 minutes in front of the screen, take 20 seconds and focus on an object 20 feet away.
Children eye care tips
● Children need to be reminded to view their screens at a proper distance, take time away from their screens, and to remember to get up and go outside and play or exercise.
● Enjoying the outside, natural sunlight, and looking at objects at a distance is healthy for their eyes.
● Also, they need to get enough sleep so they can rest their eyes. Parents now have to be more vigilant and pay more attention.
Eye exams for children
Eye exams for children are a necessity. Parents need to pay attention to how long their children are on the computer or a cell phone, how closely they watch the screen, and recognize the signs of dry eyes. The symptoms of dry eyes increase at an earlier age due to the introduction and excessive use of phones, video games, tablets, laptops, and TVs. If they start complaining about their eyes or look like they’re straining to view screens, call 20/20 Dry Eye Spa.
Young Adults Eye Care
Teens use their computers for homework, are on their phones for hours at a time, spending time gaming after school and on the weekends, and socializing daily online. This is how they have learned to communicate with the world. They spend most of their waking hours looking at screens. Homework is often completed online, too. What parents need to realize is that this affects their eyes. As a result of so many hours spent staring at screens, teens and young adults have developed dry eyes.
Eye conditions caused by prolonged screen usage
People who use digital devices suffer more from meibomian gland dysfunction or MGD (which is a deficiency in the oil layer) than others. Dry eye occurs when the eyes don’t produce enough tears or when there is an imbalance in the tears. Eyes need to be kept moisturized, comfortable, and healthy. If managed properly, they can be symptom free; however, people who are on digital devices all day tend to be more susceptible to dry eyes. Fortunately, at 20/20 Dry Eye Spa, we can treat teens and young adults, so schedule an appointment for an evaluation and to set up a treatment plan.
Young adults eye care tips
● Remind them to take frequent breaks, use the 20-20-20 rule, and to practice proper ergonomics when using technology.
● Since they will never cut down on their screen time, making sure they get up and away from their screens is important.
● Don’t forget they also need sleep! They can rest their eyes and their minds.
● Recognize the symptoms, address the condition and seek treatment.
BUY ONE GIVE ONE
We launched this program, of giving back to the children in our community of San Jose, in 2003 when there were many financial challenges to families around us. Children are our future of tomorrow and we wanted them to have the opportunity to reach for their dreams without having their vision affecting their quality of life, especially in school.
Our solution to this problem was to donate eye exams and glasses to underprivileged kids, foster kids, or children of families with financial hardships. Eye examinations and glasses are provided once annually to each child that qualifies for this program.
Through the partnership with our patients we have improved the lives of valuable members of our community. Our mission is to enhance children's quality of life by detecting and correcting vision problems so that they can reach their full potential in life.
When you purchase a second pair of glasses, we will donate a pair of glasses to a child in need!**When the second pair is purchased without insurance.
