eye doctor
Millions of people suffer from dry eyes. In fact, this syndrome is one of the most chronic and common problems we treat at our office in the San Jose, CA area. This condition affects people of all ages and genders, especially post-menopausal women.
During the dry eye evaluation, we will perform a full lid evaluation imaging your upper and lower lids with the LipiScan test, which allows us to know structurally if you have meibomian (oil) glands that are healthy or if there is atrophy of these glands that warrants professional dry eye treatment.
Our doctors will assess all of your eye symptoms and review your lifestyle habits and diet as well. Diagnostic tests will be performed to determine what the root cause of your dry eye is.
Our doctors will then prescribe the best dry eye treatment options that will reduce your dry eye symptoms so that you can feel better and regain an improved quality of life without the constant annoyance of dry eyes.
Symptoms That Require Dry Eye Treatment:● Scratchy/ itchy eyes● Foreign body sensation● Watery eyes● Fluctuating vision● Red eyes● Burning discomfort● A sandy, gritty feeling
These dry eye symptoms usually worsen in climates that are hot and dry. Environments with air conditioning, heat, smoke, or wind will also irritate or cause red eyes.

The tear film is composed of 3 layers: Oil, water, and mucous. A deficiency of one or more of these layers can cause a dry eye. Oil and/ or water deficiency is the most common case our that dry eye treatment specialists encounter and the most common reason why patients have difficulty wearing contact lenses.
We are one of the few Optometric practices in San Jose, CA that offer both the MiBoFlo and LipiFlow dry eye treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction or MGD. We now also offer IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy, which aims to reduce the inflammation, one of the root causes of dry eye symptoms.
These are some of the dry eye treatments we offer at our office:● MiBoFlo● LipiFlow● IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)● Lid hygiene● Warm compress, massage● Eyedrops, eye ointments● Bandage contact lenses● Scleral contacts● Holistic supplements● Prescription eyedrop● Amniotic membrane● Specialty eyedrops
thorough eye evaluation
A thorough evaluation of your condition is necessary to determine if you are a candidate for dry eye treatment.
The team at 20/20 Dry Eye Spa is specifically trained in this field, but your regular optometrist or ophthalmologist may not be. We focus on the causes of any problems that patients might have, address the symptoms and develop a treatment plan.
At 20/20 Dry Eye Spa, Dr. Lee and her team use state-of-the-art technology that scans the meibomian glands. This medical imaging device is called Lipiscan. The scan will show how many glands are structurally available for both the top and bottom lids. These meibomian glands secrete the oil layer of your tears and prevent the water layer from evaporating quickly. If the glands are blocked for a period of time, they can “die” or atrophy. Once they atrophy, they will never grow back, which can cause one to have permanent dry eyes.
During this evaluation, we will find out how many glands are blocked and how many active glands you have. By looking at both the function and structure of your glands, we will create a treatment plan specifically designed for you.
