Kayvon West

College student, age 20, African American

  • Read Kayvon's case

She presented with red eyes, blurred vision, and infection for the past 2+ months. She was diagnosed with keratoconus from another doctor and was referred to us for a second opinion. Her eye dryness was so severe that her glasses prescription was unreliable because her tear film was so unstable. Clinically, the front surface of her eyes was as if you took sandpaper and scraped it across the surface of her cornea multiple times that it was raw.
She presents with hundreds of dry patch zones which would easily cause her to have an infection that never heals up. Her best corrected vision was 20/40 to 20/50 level which is 3-4 lines worse than optimum level of vision. It has taken almost 1 month for the cornea to heal before we could even perform any dry eye treatment as her risk of infection was so high. The cornea needed to be intact before the dry eye treatment could be successful.
Kayvon did have Miboflo treatment and was diligent with maintenance and at home treatment. It took another 4-6 weeks before her vision returned back to normal. She is able to see 20/20 again and she does not have keratoconus either. Her eye dryness is chronic and she is continuing to be monitored and receiving ongoing treatment.

Shruti Munagala

Shruti Munagala

College student, computer science, age 20, Southeast Asia

  • Read Munagala's case

Patient was asymptomatic and wore contacts full-time for the last 9 years. During an eye examination in 2019, her Lipiscan showed 50-60% gland loss in each eye and she had severe MGD by age 19 and had zero awareness! Recommendation by Dr. Lee was to receive the Miboflo treatment immediately to prevent further gland loss, prior to her leaving for college Freshman year.
When Sruti completed her treatment, she reported that her eyes were watering more and she became more aware of dry eye symptoms. Her dry eye was so severe that she lost sensitivity and awareness of dryness until her eyes recovered and healed up. She did great her first semester of college and had minimal dryness, but she had little time in college life to do any dry eye maintenance.
She is a computer science major and the extensive studying and computer work along with the lack of blinking increased her dry eye symptoms. With COVID in 2020 and distance learning, the hours of digital use increased significantly. She now reports pain from wearing contacts by afternoon and evening, sensitivity to light, and she cannot wear contacts for as long and notices dryness daily.
Sruti was taking more breaks and feeling the need to use more eye drops. She is back in town for a short time due to COVID. Since Sruti has limited time for maintenance, we recommended Lipiflow this time. She has responded well to treatment and with lid cleaning mainly needed for post-Lipiflow care, Sruti is able to continue with online summer school class, with minimal dry eye symptoms.

Andrew

3 year old boy complained about tired eyes, fatigue, and right eye drooping

  • Read Andrew's case

PROBLEM:Andrew had a drooping right eye, but it seemed to be drooping now more than ever. He noticed it was getting in the way of his ability to complete his homework. In addition, cosmetically the drooping was making him feel self conscious about his appearance.
The patient had always had aperture or opening of his eyes smaller in the right eye than the left eye. Clinically, his eyes showed “ghost glands”, or barely visible glands, in the top lid, and minimal glands on the bottom lids.
RESULTS/SOLUTIONS:His mother had asked about surgical intervention to lift up the right eyelid. At our clinic, Andrew was treated without surgery.
After the patient’s first treatment, the right eye lid lifted up immediately. With subsequent treatments, his lid droop has improved and his eyes are not as tired at the end of the day as they had been before.
Structurally, the glands may not return, but he is functionally seeing and feeling better than before.
Andrew will need to continue with the 20/20 Dry Eye Spa treatments and the personalized maintenance plan that was developed to prevent total gland loss. While his right eye still has a slight droop, Andrew and his mom report that the biggest thing is that he is not symptomatic, his dropping has improved, and he does not feel it like he did prior to treatments starting.
We're happy 20/20 Dry Eye could help Andrew with his appearance and play a role in helping him to function at a higher level in school!

Christopher Pontiga

Firmware engineer, age 37, Filipino

Patient has been wearing scleral contacts for treatment of keratoconus since 2012. In 2018, his vision was decreasing and he was having problems with an oily film developing on his lenses. He had to take the lenses off 3-4x/ day to clean off this film; this is a huge inconvenience as these lenses require more care than soft contact lenses. Chris sees single vision with scleral lenses on.
When he wears glasses, he sees multiple images that are distorted because of the distortion he gets from the corneal disease, keratoconus, and cannot function well as his vision is at the level of legal blindness. These specialty lenses are vital to his quality of life. Chris did get treated with Miboflo and after each treatment, the film began to disappear and he was able to function again after he completed the treatment.
Maintenance is necessary to prevent the dry eyes from worsening. Unfortunately, he didn't keep up with the daily maintenance, so his symptoms came back again a year and a half later. Following his repeated treatment, he responded predictably great and is having good vision again.

Rafael Ochoa

Rafael Ochoa

Carpenter, age 50, Hispanic

  • Read Rafael's case

His eyes were chronically red, and people thought he was drunk or high. He was wearing hard lenses or RGP to see and complained about dry eyes. He is a carpenter and does construction, so he is constantly around dust/debris which further irritates his eyes. He was diagnosed with keratoconus in 2018, and he got his eyes examined to see if there were other options to improve his vision and dryness. We fitted him with scleral contact lenses to improve his vision, and he was informed that he has severe dry eyes. Scleral lenses are a treatment for dry eyes.
Rafael’s vision improved with the scleral contact lens fitting and so did the redness of his eyes, but Rafael still had discomfort with wearing his lenses and had difficulty wearing lenses the full day. Rafael still had MGD. Once he decided to receive the Miboflo treatment, his redness and ability to wear lenses both improved. He is now able to wear contacts all day, do his work with minimal irritation, and have minimal redness of his eyes.
Rafael was not following through with his daily maintenance, so he started to have symptoms of redness and irritation again. To help reduce this, he signed up for quarterly maintenance with Miboflo, which allowed him to wear contacts all day again, but his eye redness remained. He said, “People often thought I was drunk, high, or had an eye infection, because my eyes were so red”. This was just dry eyes due to inflammation.
The next step was to offer him the IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment to focus on the inflammation. Following his first visit, the redness of his eyes and dry eye symptoms dramatically reduced. As you can see in his picture, his eyes look normal again!

Simon Mohammed

Simon Mohammed

HR, age 30, African American

We have seen this patient from 2016, and he began being intolerant in wearing his scleral lenses in 2018. He developed inflammation underneath his lids referred to giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC), which prohibits him from wearing lenses comfortably. The dryness caused significant friction of the lens against the skin underneath his lids, resulting in large bumps underneath his lids that secreted mucus overnight.
He is legally blind in his right eye at 20/200 even with the specialty lenses; however, he can function better with the left eye. This GPC condition generally requires medical treatment with eye drops and discontinuation of lenses. Simon cannot see or function without these contact lenses so we recommended the Miboflo treatment. He responded well to treatment. The friction of the lens and lids reduced significantly to the point Simon was able to wear the lenses for the full day again.
Not only was the GPC managed, his visual acuity improved 2 lines too! He continues with quarterly treatments to prevent the inflammation from returning.

She did not know she had dry eyes for over 10+ years. She had to use eye drops all the time wearing contacts and eyes were red immediately; by 4 hours of wearing time, her contacts felt awful, and then she would have to use eye drops every 30 minutes until the lenses were removed. She wanted to wear contacts more, but the redness and discomfort discouraged her from wearing them.
After the first dry eye treatment her eyes felt so good. She now reports. "Now I can wear contacts all day and my eyes do not get red".

Software engineer, age 53, Caucasian

Did not realize how bad dry eyes were for the past 2-3 years. He was using eye drops every morning, he would wake him up in the middle of the night and use eye drops, and he would use them throughout the day and had bottles of eyedrops stashed everywhere, including his car.
After each treatment, he was using less and less eye drops. By the time he completed treatment, he realized he hardly used any eye drops at all. He still has a huge package of eyedrops and will rarely need to use them. He was buying eye drops regularly because that was the norm for him before but not now!

He had dry eyes for over 2 years. He was using Refresh artificial tears part-time initially, then he was needing it every night, and then he needed to use the eyedrops throughout the day as his eyes felt irritated. This impacted his ability to work, since he is a software engineer who needs to use a computer 12-14 hours/day. He even used allergy eye drops to help with the itchy, scratchy sensation.
After treatment, the irritation and scratchy sensation went away. He never knew the eyes could feel this good while working.
