Individualized Plans Make a Difference

At 20/20 Dry Eye Spa, we recognize how important it is to get to know each patient as an individual in order to set up the correct treatment plan. There is no one-size-fits-all, or one plan that works for everyone when it comes to treating dry eyes; every treatment plan is personalized. There are many options for treating dry eye syndrome, but unfortunately, there is no cure.

The team at 20/20 Dry Eye Spa treats the cause of the eye problem not just the symptoms. ● We evaluate the environment and lifestyle of a patient to see if changes can be made to reduce the symptoms of dry eyes. ● Once we identify the causes, a program is customized to each patient.
The mode of treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition. With the proper treatment plan in place, the team will work with the patient to maintain relief over time.

Children and Young Adults Need to Get Evaluated

A deficiency of oil, water, or mucus on the surface of your eyes causes dry eyes. Your eyes are not being moisturized by enough tears. This can be caused by contact lenses, medications, or the environment. Even if a person can make tears, the quality of tears may be poor or significantly less than normal. The drier the eyes, the more the cornea can become desensitized, so often people get used to chronic dry eyes.

Would you let your car run out of oil and not function correctly? You probably take your vehicle in for regular oil changes, so it doesn’t run dry. Treat your eyes regularly, too, and don’t let them dry out. 20/20 Dry Eye Spa treats for dry eyes, so it doesn't become the norm. There is no reason to live with dry eyes when there is a treatment available.

Treating Obstruction and Inflammation Together

Comprehensive Dry Eye Treatment in San Jose, CA

The two main root causes of dry eye are obstruction of the meibomian glands and inflammation. Our 20/20 Dry Eye Spa offers 2 in-office procedures, Miboflo or Lipiflow, which both assists in removing meibomian gland obstruction. The most effective holistic way to alleviate inflammation is to use IPL, Intense Pulsed Light.

Our dry eye outcomes are significantly superior when both the obstruction and the inflammation are treated simultaneously during the same appointment than if they were done separately. In other words, two treatments work synergistically better together than one.

thorough eye evaluation

Lipiscan and Diagnostic Testing

A thorough evaluation of your condition is necessary to determine if you are a candidate for dry eye treatment.

The team at 20/20 Dry Eye Spa is specifically trained in this field, but your regular optometrist or ophthalmologist may not be. We focus on the causes of any problems that patients might have, address the symptoms and develop a treatment plan.

normal vs dry eyelid

At 20/20 Dry Eye Spa, Dr. Lee and her team use state-of-the-art technology that scans the meibomian glands. This medical imaging device is called Lipiscan. The scan will show how many glands are structurally available for both the top and bottom lids. These meibomian glands secrete the oil layer of your tears and prevent the water layer from evaporating quickly. If the glands are blocked for a period of time, they can “die” or atrophy. Once they atrophy, they will never grow back, which can cause one to have permanent dry eyes.

During this evaluation, we will find out how many glands are blocked and how many active glands you have. By looking at both the function and structure of your glands, we will create a treatment plan specifically designed for you.

MiBo Thermoflo & LipiFlow

We’re one of the few optometric practices that offer both the MiBo Thermoflo and LipiFlow treatments for meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Both procedures are safe and have good results. The doctors at 20/20 Dry Eye Spa will be happy to explain the differences in procedure and determine which treatment is best for you.

OptiLight by Lumenis

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) by Lumenis

We are proud to also offer IPL, Intense Pulsed Light. OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, non-invasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. This is the first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.

  • Treatment plans and options for dry eyes

    ● Specialty Eye Drops● Miboflo● IPL (intense pulsed light) ● Scleral Contacts ● Amniotic membrane ● Lifestyle Changes● Hydration Strategies● Holistic ‘at home” therapy● Lipiflow● Nutrition/Supplements● Amniotic Drops● Sleep Management● Digital Devices Management

  • What is Mibo Thermoflo?

    ● Continuous heat is applied over the ultrasound gel, placed on the outer eyelid skin.● Gentle eyelid massage using the Miboflo device breaks down the hardened lipids.● The heat absorbs into the tissue and helps to break down the hardened lipids allowing the glands to produce thinner, clearer lipids and a healthier tear film.● Experience immediate relief after a relaxing treatment.

  • What is Lipiflow?

    ● A 12- minute treatment designed to remove obstruction of the meibomian glands.● Heat is delivered to both the inner and outer lids with a therapeutic motion.● Obstruction of the glands are “flushed” out with this procedure, allowing the fresh, clean tear film to replace the old one.

  • What is IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)?

    ● Non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy light pulses (not laser) to target inflammation in the skin and around the eyes.
    ● Using IPL for treatment of dry eyes helps reduce inflammation to the meibomian glands, which are located in the eyelids and produces the oils that keep the eyes lubricated.
    ● Effective therapy for those who have ocular rosacea, spider veins and rosacea.
    ● Helps repair damaged cells, eradicates damaged blood vessels, and reduces inflammation to improve the function of the meibomian glands.
    ● Improves tear production, making the eyes more comfortable and irritated.
    ● Stimulates collagen production to improve the overall health and appearance of the skin around the eyes.
    ● Eradicates bacteria and Demodex eye mites in or around the eyelids.

  • Maintenance after in-office procedures
