Shaun

Optical Manager/ Eyewear Stylist

I am your personal eyewear stylist. I personally hand pick every frame that’s in our office. Not too many people enjoy their job, but I can honestly say, “I LOVE what I do.” I have been working with Dr. Lee for over 9 years. I was born and raised in Hawaii and I learned how important good UV protection was for the eyes. By the age of five, Oakley sunglasses were at the top of my Christmas list, not an Atari game or Barbie dolls. I was the only child in my grade school with a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses. Growing up I always used designer eyewear. In my personal eyewear wardrobe, I own over 60 pairs of eyewear.

While working full-time here, I have been going to school part-time. Fall of 2008, I have acquired my Bachelors of Science Degree in Advertising. After graduating, I have decided to stay in the optical field because I’ve realized eyewear is one of my passions.

Other than my passion for eyewear, my other passion is food! I love to eat out, cook and entertain. In fact, my television is set on the Food Network 75% of the time. If you have any interesting recipes, or know of any great restaurants, let me know. Outside of working, I enjoy traveling, playing volleyball, riding my mountain bike and working out.

I first became a part of the 20/20 staff after I meet Dr. Lee at a work seminar through Heald College. It was the first seminar that I had been to that really caught my interest because of the information she shared with all of us Heald students. After the seminar I spoke with a few people at career services and further pursued an opening position with 20/20 Optometry. I am so glad I did. I enjoy working with all of the staff here. Everyone is friendly and willing to help. We are an interesting bunch and there is never a dull moment in our office.

I have been wearing glasses since I was six years old and contacts since the age of 12. So I have spent some time in an Optometry office well growing up. Being able to actually work in this office and seeing what really goes on in all areas is an awesome experience. I know so much more about the eyes then I ever did. I also have never met an eye doctor who took the time to examine a patient's eyes. We not only care about the health of the patient's eyes but also your overall physical health.

I graduated in 2009 from Heald College with a certificate in Medical Billing and Coding and then went right back to further purse my A.A. in Medical Billing and Coding. I am happy to say that I have completed all my class and have graduated from Heald with my A.A, which I am very happy about. While I am not working I love to spend my time with my daughter and my family. We enjoy going to the parks, ridding bikes, and going on road trips hopefully we get around to doing more of these activities very soon.

I was born and raised in Sai Gon, Vietnam. At the age of fourteen, I began living the American dream by moving to Northern California. I completed my undergraduate studies at San Jose State University with a major in Biological Science, a minor in Chemistry, and a minor in Business. I got my first job as a receptionist at an optometry office during my first year in college and the aspects of the profession immediately attracted me.  Optometry combines all the things that I was looking for in a lifetime passion: application of science, flexibility, social interaction with people, and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.

I am glad I found 20/20 Optometry. Not only am I getting hands-on clinical experience, but also I am part of a family of staff who enjoy every second of their work.  I love the way Dr. Lee interacts with her patients.  Watching Dr. Lee use various equipment to help her determine patients’ eyeglass prescription or fit patients in contacts or treat a patient with dry eyes was so exciting to see that I can’t wait to become an optometrist myself.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family. I am crazy for spicy food and I won't turn down any opportunity to show off my gifted talent.  One of my proud accomplishments was winning the 911 Hellfire challenge at Smoke Eaters. Dare to challenge me???

It is my pride and joy to be part of 20/20 Optometry.  It is a pleasure to work with Dr. Lee again since we worked together over 10 years ago prior to her opening her own office.

My career began in the Philippines when I studied Optometry there.  After coming to the U.S., I became certified as a contact lens specialist and fit contact lenses at Kaiser.  I have been a certified optician and stylist for years.  I feel fortunate that I love my job.  With over 30 years of experience and passion for the optical field, I can truly give superior care to my patients and find them the right eyewear to make each person look good and feel great!  20/20 Optometry uses state of the art optical technology and advanced technology in treatment that enables me to take care of my patients successfully.

In the work place, I perform a great number of duties and wear many hats.  At any given time, I am a receptionist, optometric assistant, tour guide, teacher and stylist.  Yet, more importantly to the people around me, I am a mentor, a mother and a friend.

I love to travel, dance, mingle with my friends and thrive on taking on new challenges.  I enjoy this drive towards personal and professional growth.  After all, you don;t know if you like something until you try!

My story with 20/20 Optometry actually started as an internship with Dr. Lee. My experience as an intern for Dr. Lee broadened my perspective about the Optometry field because I not only learned about the overall heath care of the eye but eye wear, contacts, LASIK, and the business aspect of running a private practice. After my internship, I backpacked throughout South America and returned with the same burning desire to learn more about Optometry.

Working at the office has been a wonderful experience. The staff here is a family who has welcomed me with warm smiles and food. Everyone here is always willing to teach me and I know when I go to optometry school I will bring the philosophies and skills I've acquired to make me a better student, and one day a great doctor.

When I am not working, I like to be outside.  I enjoy biking, snowboarding, skim boarding, exploring, hiking, and I even began to learn how to surf.  I love trying new activities, eating exotic foods, and having good conversations with people.   My quote is: I live to eat, not eat to live.
